Outside the London area, on the standard tax code, with no student loan and no responsibility payment. The Teachers' Pension Scheme is a net pay arrangement, so the contribution comes off before income tax.

Pension contribution tiers from 1 April 2026

Teachers' Pensions sets the member rate by the annual salary rate for the employment rather than the full-time equivalent, so a part-time contract is banded on what it actually pays. The bands rose by 3.8 per cent from 1 April 2026 in line with the Pensions Increase.

The other teacher pay ranges

Two further ranges sit outside the main and upper pay ranges. They are set as a minimum and a maximum with no advisory points, so they are stated here as ranges rather than given their own pages.

What these pages do not include

Basic pay is not the whole payslip. A teaching and learning responsibility payment, a special educational needs allowance, an unqualified teacher's allowance or an acting allowance are all paid on top and are set by the school within limits in the document. Leadership pay, including deputy and assistant headteacher and headteacher group ranges, is a separate structure and is not covered here.

Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

The document covers England only. Wales has its own School Teachers' Pay and Conditions (Wales) Document, Scotland negotiates through the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers, and Northern Ireland through its own machinery, so these figures should not be read across. The Teachers' Pension Scheme covers England and Wales; Scotland and Northern Ireland run separate schemes. Scottish income tax also differs, which the Scottish income tax calculator covers.

When these figures change

A new pay and conditions document is published for each academic year and takes effect from 1 September. The document named above was the current one when this page was last reviewed. Pension contribution bands change separately, on 1 April each year, in line with the Pensions Increase.

Work out your own figure

These pages are the clean case: full-time work, the standard tax code, no student loan and no allowance. Open the take-home pay calculator to add a responsibility payment, a student loan plan or a different tax code.

The main pay range runs from £32,916 at M1 to £45,352 at M6, and the upper pay range from £47,472 at U1 to £51,048 at U3, outside the London area, in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document 2025.

How much does a newly qualified teacher earn?

A teacher starting on M1 is paid £32,916 a year outside the London area, £40,317 in inner London, £37,870 in outer London and £34,398 on the fringe.

Are the teacher pay points compulsory?

No. The minimum and maximum of each range are compulsory, but the points between them are advisory. A school sets its own pay policy and must pay within the range.

How do teachers move to the upper pay range?

By application, at least once a year in line with the school's pay policy. The application succeeds where the school is satisfied the teacher is highly competent in all elements of the relevant standards and that their contribution is substantial and sustained.
