How State Pension age is worked out

The State Pension age is set by your date of birth, not by a single fixed number. People born on or before 5 April 1960 reach it at 66. For those born between 6 April 1960 and 5 March 1961, the age is phased up month by month towards 67, so your birthday inside that window decides the exact age. Anyone born from 6 March 1961 onwards has a State Pension age of at least 67.

Worked example

Someone born on 15 June 1962 falls after the transition window, so their State Pension age is a flat 67. They reach it on their 67th birthday, 15 June 2029. A person born a couple of years earlier, say in mid-1960, would instead land part way through the 66-to-67 phase and reach their pension a few months after their 66th birthday.

Why this matters

Your State Pension age is also the point from which you stop paying National Insurance on earnings, and it is the earliest you can claim the State Pension. It is not the same as your private pension age, which is 55 now and 57 from April 2028. Knowing the date helps you plan how to bridge any gap between leaving work and the State Pension starting.

Common questions

What is the State Pension age at present?

It is 66 for people born on or before 5 April 1960. For those born after that it rises gradually to 67, reaching a flat 67 for anyone born on or after 6 March 1961. A further rise to 68 is set in law for the mid-2040s, and is under review.

When does the State Pension age rise to 67?

The increase from 66 to 67 is phased in between 6 April 2026 and April 2028. If you were born between 6 April 1960 and 5 March 1961 your pension age lands somewhere between 66 and 67, depending on your exact date of birth.

Will the State Pension age reach 68?

Under current law the rise to 68 happens between 2044 and 2046, affecting people born on or after 6 April 1977. The government reviews the timetable regularly and has been considering bringing it forward, so treat any age of 68 here as a guide that could change.

Is my State Pension age the same as when I can take a private pension?

No. You can normally take a private or workplace pension from age 55, rising to 57 from April 2028. The State Pension age is separate and later, and it is also the age from which you stop paying National Insurance on earnings.
